WinTorg is an easy to use simulation of the process of identifying unknown organic compounds. It is suitable for use at early university or college level. Spectroscopy is emphasised. The shareware version is limited to 3 unknowns; the registered version has 100. For each compound there are four spectra (pmr, cmr, ir, ms) and uv data together with physical and chemical properties. Unknowns can be identified by any mix of spectroscopy and chemical tests. It is possible to use the program as a source of spectroscopic unknowns (and avoid chemical tests entirely). Alternatively it can be used to simulate traditional qualitative organic analysis. An extensive integrated help system is available. This includes five spectroscopic calculators, spectral correlation information, chemical equations for reactions and tables of compounds. There is a worked example. Once an unknown has been identified, assignments of its major spectroscopic features are revealed. The instructor can customize the program (22 different parameters can be set). Chemical tests and/or derivatives can be hidden (thereby allowing only spectroscopic data). Students can have multiple sessions or not by controlling if progress can be saved to disk. The amount of help that a student may obtain can be controlled. For example, WinTorg with the help system enabled could be used by students while they are learning about spectroscopy and identifying unknowns. Then the help system could be disabled and the program used for assessment since student progress is tracked and reported. The instructor can also control how unknowns are to be allocated: either randomly by the program or directly by the instructor.
